Speaking of dogs, my cattle dog was acting strange a few minutes ago. She was running around like she was onto something, worked her way behind the couch and came out with a mouse. Never had a dog that could catch a mouse much less a 50 pound blue healer. Time to put the traps out.

I had a stray show up at my place many years ago, turned out it was a rat terrier. Smartest dog I've ever been around, and the mouser from hell. The dog lived outside, never came in the house, never was tied up.
It kept the barn and property free of vermin.

That dog was hell on wheels. Squirrels, gophers, mice, rabbits all lived in terror of that dog. The best part about was the dog ate its kill.

Our dog Jack loves getting mice. He can sniff them out of about anyplace.
Several times we would have a mouse get up inside our outdoor grill and Jack would come in the house and get me to come out and help him get the mouse out of the grill.
I'd shake it and move it around until the mouse dropped out and then it's all over.

We have had an unusually high number of mice this year, even getting in the house. Haven't caught a one in last week since my female goldie caught a rat in the back yard. Wife wasn't happy but Piper got a real nice treat! She's caught squirrels, moles, and gophers, but that was the first rat. I have noticed a lot of hawks lately. They all go in cycles

Here, but occasionally There.
Didn't have any dogs at the time, but a fair number of outside cats. I managed a country grain elevator up in the Panhandle. One year, they put up a brand new 150,000 bushel metal grain bin to complement the 150,000 bushel concrete elevator. Sadly, they used grade 5 bolts instead of grade 8, so after we got it filled, it collapsed. Of course, that attracted LOTS and LOTS of mice. Cats loved it...snakes loved it...me? Not so much. I was shooting at mice in my office with a BB gun.

My dog has caught and eaten mice before. I was visiting my father and he got one. Probably a better mouser than a cat, LOL. He just scarfed it down while a lot of cats will keep them alive and play with them sometimes letting them go when they get bored.

I do know that the terriers were kept years ago for rats and such so a dog being a decent mouser does not surprise me.
