My office # has been 539 since 2012.
So does this mean 405 won’t be my area code anymore? I don’t understand this whole deal. I would have to call every place that has my number and tell them we have a new area code. Sounds like a huge nightmare.
likely not. it just means that new numbers will be issued within the same area using the new area code. It doesn't change anything beyond creating two numbers with the same 7 digits, but different area codes. So, someone calling you will have to add '405-' to reach you and adding the new area code, but the same number you have, will reach another person. Your number has always been 10 digits, it's just that the first three weren't needed inside your area because it was all 405. Now that will be different and the first three numbers matter.
It will cause confusion for some, but as others have noted, most people have been operating with 10 digit phone numbers for a while now. And that is how most young people likely view them (in the same way older people viewed a 'phone number' as being 4 digits). We are just conditioned to think of it as a 7 digit thing unless calling long distance. But now, that is a thing of the past really.
