Don't know why it is but every time I think about the Ford Pinto for some reason I also remember the AMC Pacer.

Isn't the Pinto the car that had a rear mounted fuel tank and had a tendency to catch on fire / blowup if rear ended ?

Yes, especially when the media rigged them to. Serious they have that reputation but unbiased testing proved they were no worse than other sub compacts.

I had a trailer hitch on my pinto.
Brother-in-law got a trailer stuck in a ditch his 1985 chevy short bed with 305" engine and TH 350 trans would not pull it out.
His engine just reved a little as the stock converter was a very low stall and he could not even spin a wheel.
Trailer in shallow bar ditch and truck on pavement.

I told him Unhook and I will hook my pinto to it and pull it out.
I had 355 posi track and 4 speed with a slightly tweaked 2.3 engine.
I pulled it right out and hauled arse down the road and busted a second gear scratch with trailer in tow.
I had 245-60-14 tires on the rear and 235-60-14 on front.

It would beat that truck in a drag race by a lot.
Never had any of my cars blow up.

This thread reminds me of a childhood family friend who worked as a supervisor at the GM Lordstown plant in Ohio in the 60s and 70s. He bought a ‘76 Cosworth Vega right off the line, at a time when a Corvette was not much more money. I remember the one time I saw the car; maroon with tan interior, but what I remember most is how the owner carped about the electronic fuel injection being a PITA. Don’t know what happened after that, though.

Man, I knew a lot of people who had Pintos back in the day, but just recently in this thread right here is the first time I ever heard anyone say they were glad or wished they owned one.
A friend of mine had one with a 302 and a 6-point roll cage in it. It was pretty cool.

I actually had a Pinto wagon. Got it from my oldest brother for my step-daughter's first car. Don't even remember the year model, but it sure seemed smaller than the one in the OP.

Those AMC Pacers were deceptively large on the inside. I'm 6' 1" and had a surprising amount of leg room. Kinda like driving a greenhouse though... :D

A friend of mine put a hopped up 302 and a posi track Ranchero rear end in his Pinto.

It was green and with the wide 50 series rear tires sticking so far out it looked like a big frog that was ready to launch.

It would pull wheelies easily.
