I don't care much for punching paper so when I go to the range with one of my four 45 ACP 1911's the only thing I enjoy shooting is the steel gongs at 25 yds.......using a regular standing two hand hold and my 230 gr. FMJ ball reloads.

Up till now I figured I was doing pretty good being able to ring the 8" gong about as often as I wanted to fling lead down range and the 6" gong probably about 70% or 80% of the time but after reading a bit this morning about Bullseye competitions and those people being able to to keep around 2" groups at 25 yds. and not much more at 50 yds., compared to them it kinda makes me feel like I'm shooting blindfolded but I guess as long as I'm having fun and enjoying myself that's all that matters.

I shot a bullseye match once. They did what they called the ‘staple challenge’. They would put a dollar in the pot for those that wanted to shoot the challenge. There’s a staple in the X of the bullseye. If someone shoots the staple out, they get the pot. I’m thinking, yeah right. This is 50 yards off hand. It was a piece of cake for a couple guys.

They have probably had some custom work done on their guns too.

And they can probably still see the target and the bullseye at 50 yards too. Don’t beat yourself up, I’d be happy to be ringing that gong, and it’s much more satisfying than just pokin’ holes in paper too.

If you're keeping all your hits inside 8" offhand at 25 yards, you're doing better than 90% of the people who bother going to the range.

Don't ya' just hate 'em?

I joined a centerfire pistol league this year. First time I've ever done anything like that. Five to 25 yards. I ain't bad at 5, 10 and 15. But that 15, 20 and 25 yard target looks kinda' like 000 buckshot from a cylinder bore. I also didn't realize until this just how bad the cataract in my right eye has gotten. :scream::crying:

We have to shoot from the 25 yard line with our annual cleet requals. I can usually keep em all in, but I gotta work at it. I'd just as well wish cleet would do away with the 25, but oh well. :rolleyes2

I remember when I was in rookie school way back in 1990, we had to shoot from the 50 yard line. :ooh2: And that was with a double action revolver and its LONG 15 pound trigger pull! :faint:
