This is a OK Tax form question to determine if a dependent must file.

You must file if any of the following apply:
  • Your unearned income was over $1,050
  • Your earned income was over $6,300
  • Your gross income was more than the larger of:
    • $1,050, or
    • Your earned income (up to $5,950) plus $350.

Say there was no unearned income, and earned income of $2,000. Gross income is the total of the unearned and earned income. According to the language above, does the dependent need to file??

If there's no unearned income, that language indicates that the dependent does not need to file. $2,000 is less than both $6,300 and $2,350 (earned income plus $350, which is larger than $1,050).

DISCLAIMER: I am absolutely NOT qualified to answer this question, and this is why I use a CPA.

But I vote no, according JUST to what is posted here, they would not have to file. None of those conditions seems to apply.

I don’t speak Tax language either.

“Unearned income?” What does that even mean? Are they trying to tax stolen money cause it wasn’t earned?

The longer I think about federal and state income taxes, the more apparent it has become to me that one of the main objectives is to intimidate and subjugate the citizenry using indecipherable language that even the people in charge of administering it do not understand...... That is the deeper meaning addressed in the thread title

If you think income taxes are just a fact of life, I hope your chains rest lightly upon you.
Fairtax.org shows how to do away with the tyranny and put a stake through its heart. The FAQs address your questions.

That just applies to everyone we currently have in the House or Senate.

Interest, dividends, alimony, child support, etc.

Wait ... child support probably doesn't belong in there. IDK - ask a CPA!
