I put more rounds down range this weekend than I have in a long time. My son in law and I spent the better part of Saturday testing loads, sighting in rifles and running self defense drills with various pistols. I got a couple of my rifles chronographed (thanks to GMAR). All in all, Saturday was a real good day.

Then after thoroughly cleaning my elk rifle, I went out today to start logging and charting shots. I decided to take this AR out to sight it in since I built it a year ago and had never fired it. After getting it zeroed at 100 yds, I tested a few factory loads. Blackhills 52 gr HP, Hornady 55 gr V-Max, and Winchester Ranger 64 gr power points. All shot sub 1” groups but I put 3 shots of the Hornady through the same hole. I’m thinking this one is a keeper!

One of the loads I’ve been testing is 30 cal, 178 gr ELD-X out of my Rem Mod 7, 300 SAUM @ 2,933 fps.

I set 4 one gallon jugs of water in a row and shot them to see what the round would do. After shooting at 100 yds, 3 jugs were completely exploded and the 4th was split in the front with an exiting bullet hole/flap of plastic on the back. The bullet had enough energy to make it through the 4th jug, but just barely. The copper jacket was lying less than a foot behind that last jug. The lead core was in pieces with the biggest pieces remaining inside the 3rd jug.

That 55gr V-Max is my favorite bullet for deer.
Not 1 has went more than 30 yards and 90% of them drop where you hit them.
Do not underestimate that bullet.
It is my go to in my rifles that use that round.
They also have a lead tipped 55gr flat base Hornady bullet.. it does not kill as quickly ..that bullet stays together and mushrooms and will usually be found on the off side under the skin of a deer.

The plastic tipped V-Max will go in a couple inches and then begin to come apart like a hand grenade. The shock is tremendous.
I use it on Hogs also and coyote and other critters that need to go to sleep.
