I am not sure this is the same story... I remember reading it a few days ago, but was under the impression it had happened very recently, this story is from last May. But the description of a security guard firing and accidentally hitting a student is VERY similar.

I haven't found a more recent article yet.

Thanks for the link.

One paragraph from the article.

Investigators are also looking into the possibility that a bullet fired by that security guard may have hit and wounded one of the students who was injured in the attack. That question is not likely to be settled until all ballistics testing is completed.

It also stated that the security officer was a former Marine and sheriffs deputy.

Yeah, again though... that may or may not be the same event, I remember reading it a few days ago and being under the impression it was recent.

I think at least training that would cover proper gun handling and just keeping it in a holster, or proper carry purse would be a good thing.

Some gun owners just stick in their pocket and think they're good to go.

A couple of years ago a college professor somewhere had his pocket gun go off while he was in front of a class.

First of all I didn't see anything in that article that stated that the teachers were being "charged with protecting the lives of others".

My wife is a teacher. You can dang well guarantee that she'd be protecting the lives of her students regardless of the situation and whether she was armed or not.

I agree that the teachers would most likely protect the students but that is much different from them being charged to protect them.

And at the end of the day line up the students that have given the teachers problems and take care of business. Guarantee the next day every student will be polite an considerate. Seriously, train, train, train and not every teacher has the capability or wherewithal to carry much less shoot a gun. And what if a student sides up to a teacher with a paper and a question and takes their weapon? Doesn't the technology exist whereby the gun recognizes the specific shooter and if someone else gets the gun they can't shoot it?

Absolutely need the training. Spend a couple of hours in a typical classroom and watch all the distractions that teachers must deal with on a daily basis. Now add in the potential of an armed intruder breaking into a room. a little training on what happens next is a must.

Also, the vast majority of schools and teachers are doing a great job of keeping their classrooms safe. How many incidents have actually happened, vs the number of classrooms on a daily basis. Darn good record of protecting their students.
