I think it would be good to get non shooting parents and kids involved in shooting sports, what do you think? Anyone interested in helping get an event scheduled and support it with volunteers? Anyone have contact with range owner or management? My thoughts is they likely have insurance that may cover an event like this? It could be an all rimfire event to teach most importantly gun safety, range etiquitte and marksmanship. I would think we would have enough certified range instructors that we could have 1 instructor per lane. Others could be gophers and help the event to run smoothly. Fliers at Academy Sports stores, Wal Marts sporting good counters, etc. with information, and an email address for RSVP and/or questions.

I frequently read on here about encounters at the range with unsafe shooters or those that don't understand gun safety. If we can use our knowledge and experience to teach others, it could prevent a firearm injury or death. It could also sway negative opinions of firearms to our side.

This is up for discussion/suggestions and ultimately a request for help to get an event organized and accomplished.

I will fully support activities to introduce firearms safety and shooting sports to kids. Not that it can't be done without them, but would it be easier to start up by joining or affiliating with an existing organization that has resources or access to resources already in place? i.e. NRA, ORA, OK2A, local gun clubs that are affiliated with a range
For example, Friends of the NRA sponsors skeet or trap shooting for youth in Payne County.

While in high school in a fairly good sized city as a freshman we all handled a couple firearms but that was about it. It was required and something that each grade did as a required part of phys ed.

Oddly enough when I went to a more rural school nothing of that nature was done. I guess it was assumed that everyone had them and knew what to do. But the more we introduce people to them of any age the better it is.

I would be happy to help out if anything gets going though.

One suggestion: Start with air rifles. Parents may be more relenting for their kids to learn on them and maybe step up to a .22lr. Get a couple of Daisy model 25's or the classic Powerline 880 and let them plink away at some cans. Perfect way to teach them gun safety with less of a lethal threat.

We have a program in Ponca City that teaches youth shooting programs, that is sponsored by the Ponca City Rifle and Pistol club.
It's been in existence since the 1950's. I went through the program at the Darr School location which used to be a training school for British pilots during WWII.
The location was moved later to its current location and continues to train kids with some incredible Anschutz rimfire rifles and ammo that comes from the Friends of the NRA banquets that are later distributed to local clubs applying for grants. The kids get to shoot against their parents, and sometimes the local National Guard shooting unit will bring in their team to shoot against the e kids.
Great program, and the folks that put the program on have done it for many years now.

Just a little more brain storming. If we hosted this at an outdoor range, we could possibly have enough suppressors for .22 rimfire that we would only need eye protection for the participants.

@druryj feel free to move this over with your post.

H&H has an indoor BB gun range, lead pellets only. I think targets are free. Motor driven targets just like a real range , as well as lots of little spinners and animal silhouettes to plink at. Good fun for a few bucks if you cant shoot in your neighborhood
