75yrs ago today the Marines and 1 Honorary Marine raised the flag over Mt. Suribachi.
An Admiral was quoted saying Uncommon Valor was a Common Virtue. 22 Marines was awarded the Medal of Honor. 5 was awarded to Sailors, 4 of which were Navy Corpsman, (Honorary Marines). Only 82 MOH were awarded to Marines in WWII, so that is over 25% in one battle.

GySgt. John Basilone, awarded the Medal of Honor on Guadalcanal, was killed on the first day of Iwo Jima. He was awarded the Navy Cross (posthumously) for that action. No rotating back to The World in WWII.

Was honored to know one of those Marines, Jim Goodrich from Garber. He made it through Guadalcanal, Tarawa and Iwo Jima where he was wounded in action. Passed away in 2015
