So after some reading and research, I decided to order a Traditions Kentucky Long Rifle Kit. Midway has them on sale right now; it was $298 with taxes and shipping. Should be here next week. Most places are asking $350-400 for the same Kit so I feel like I got a good deal.

I’m a history buff, in particular the Revolutionary and Civil War Periods, so this rifle from 1773 era fits right in. I read about all I could find on the subject, watched a couple of vids and am excited to do this.

Has anyone used the Laurel Mountain Brown to do one of these? It seems a lot of the better quality outcomes have used this finish over Brownells Plum Brown, or a cold blue, but of course, any input from OSA will take priority over what others have had to say as we all know the real experts are all here. But seriously, any tips or techniques you used or recommend would be appreciated.

I’ll post a new thread and pics of the project as I get started on it and will update the thread as I go. I just have to have patience...take my time and do it right.

I have always loved the idea of building one of these and hanging it over my entry way. But I am the same way. I don't know that I have the patience or skill to make it look the way my high standards would expect it to look.

I’ll hang it in a dark corner if it comes out looking like crap.

But my intentions are too really take my time, use the right tools and materials, and do this project right. I want it to look beautiful and function excellently too.

Many moons (as in 12 moons a year x 30 years) ago I built a CVA Hawken kit and used Birchwood Casey Plum Brown. Have hunted with it almost every b.p. season since and the finish is still in good shape.
Good luck, have fun and as mentioned before, take your time.

Seems like this “browning the barrel” borders on the messy side; probably something best done in the garage rather than the wife’s kitchen?

Yep. The chemical I used needed to be applied to warm metal. I borrowed a heat gun and did my best to get it evenly warm and then moved quickly to apply. I did make a bit of a mess.
