So I have established that I want to build a dissipator that is free floated, but I'm not 100% clear on how to make that happen. I have never built an upper, but I understand how. If the handguard goes over the end of the barrel to to attach to the upper, how does it get around the front sight block? Do you attach the FSB after the handguard? If so how do you attach the gas tube with the guard already in place? Or would you use a low profile gas block in carbine or mid length then pin on a dummy fsb at the end? Sorry if this isn't clear. So for reference, how do you make the upper in these pictures?

You'd need a low profile gas block, usually that gets installed first with the tube, then the handguard slips over it.

I'm not sure the front sight in your picture is integrated with the gas block? It looks like it may be JUST a front sight clamped to the barrel. But I'm not certain, usually with a free float hand guard, if you want iron sights on it you put flip up sights on the picatinny rail.

If the gas block is incorporated into the front sight on that one, it's the first I've seen. Not sure how that would work unless part of it sticks up under the handguard unseen.

You can use a front sight gas block, but only after you've installed the free float handguard. You'd line up the barrel nut to the gas tube hole in the upper (if the nut needs to be timed that is) and install the handguard, then take the front sight post with the gas tube already pinned and install on the barrel. Does that make sense?

Personally I'm not a huge fan of front sight posts so I'd install a low-pro gas block and use a BUIS pair on the top pic rail if you really want 'em...

PSA makes a faux dissapator upper that may make things easier for you if you are just going for the look and don't really need the rifle length gas system.

I like PSAs dissipator, I had one for a while. What I don't care for is the gap for the delta ring. With a free float the rail butts all the way up the the upper and there is no gap. I just prefer fixed front sight post over flip up sights.

You remove the delta ring assembly, etc., and install the free float rail of your choice.
