The History Guy does an excellent job of talking about historical events on YouTube. Within the last 4 or 5 months, I've run across some of his videos that were related to the Coast Guard. I'll post a few here.

This first one is about the Coast Guard Auxiliary, specifically during the time of WWII when a lot of boat owners joined the Auxiliary to relieve the regular Coast Guard to do more in the way of wartime duties. Some of the "well known" names in this video surprised me.

Their boot camp is modeled after the Corps, had a squad go thru ITR with us at Camp Pendleton. They have my respect.

I'm sure this is a very sterilized portrayal, but it's still insightful for those who don't know how involved USCG training actually is (because a lot of people seem to think they're just tactical lifeguards):

I can testify to their tactical readiness, and their ability to protect our country. I've talked about this before.
After 911 and the USS Cole attacks, a buddy and I pulled into Galveston Harbor in his cabin cruiser boat to meet our wives after a morning of fishing while they were shopping. Picked them up and headed back out going by a big cruise ship at harbor. We were 200' or so away from it and a Coast Guard cutter with full steam ahead intercepted us with the deck gun and a half dozen sailors pointing M-16's at us over the rail of the cutter.
We got a pretty good a$$ chewing from a crewman on the cutter before getting released to proceed.
Pretty scary looking down those muzzles. The legal distance is 500' in that harbor and we didn't see the buoys. Frankly didn't know the new rule.

I just saw this thread so I know I am reviving a deader, but yes there are a few of us here. I was stationed at Barbers Point in the mid 70s.

Another example proving they were, indeed, "The Greatest Generation"
