It's interesting to note that the scientist quoted in the article has "no background as an epidemiologist". He's a chemist. I take that as just another voice in the crowded field of voices right now.

It is also interesting to note that one of the foremost epidemiologist in the U.S. (Fauci) and many other of his counterparts got it completely wrong about how to handle this Covid problem and where it was headed. This quote from the author of the article, Prof Levitt, seems to be spot on. "The problem with epidemiologists is that they feel their job is to frighten people into lockdown, social distancing. So you say 'there's going to be a million deaths' and when there are only 25,000 you say 'it's good you listened to my advice'. This happened with Ebola and bird flu. It's just part of the madness." I would rarely discount a 'numbers guy" as just another voice in the crowded field of voices. He seems to have a better prediction with Covid that the "experts".

People are torqued...I get it. Lots of anger over restrictions, that may or may not have helped locally, but we know that lost local jobs and failed local businesses are real. The economic damage will continue to unfold.

My daughter's friend lived straight south of there just north of 19th street. I think it was the 1st street north of 19th off Bryant, IIRC.

That part of the neighborhood is still new to me. When I grew up in Moore I had a friend that lived very close to that, also off bryant, but it was long before Heritage Trails and the street just north of the school was built. Even after I moved back from Vegas I don't believe that area had been built, that was 04-05 before I moved to BA.

Unfold it will. Right now the Fed is still considering negative interest rates. The banks are about to get hit with a tidal wave of foreclosures, defaults, and loss of usable revenue. If we think the house bubble was bad back in 08-09, this has the potential to make that look like a slight bump in the road. And right now most of the more populous areas are sticking to this lock down madness with Texas being the lone exception. Remember why we have the electoral college? Well California alone has more people than many other states combined. If the major cities stay on lock down that is going to be a lot of people out of jobs. And there is no way Cali can pay for them, not with their deficit as high as it is. If both Cali and NYC continue, thats a major chunk of the US population out of work.

Right now I'm thankful I'm still working, and that my wife was able to get unemployment. But I fear this country's financial heartbeat is in arrhythmia and the democrats have the paddles locked away... for our safety of course..

Here's the interesting thing with the Fauci fixation on both the left and the right.

Fauci is not in charge of any policy setting organization in the federal government. He doesn't run the CDC and he doesn't run the White House COVID Task Force. He's not even the federal response coordinator for this pandemic. Pence runs the task force. Dr. Birx is the Coordinator, and Trump is the President. Fauci runs a research arm of the NIH, one of many.

If the federal response was wrong, it can't all be laid at his feet. If the federal response was awesome, he didn't do it all himself.

The reality is that those who like Trump will see it all as "job well done" and those who do not like Trump will see that everything was done poorly, at best. There is not a black-white answer to the original question. How do you determine the number of lives that were saved by these measures?

If anything, we will not learn from this event, and will repeat, with greater polarization, next time.

And if we don't reopen then it won't matter who is safe, our entire economic system will collapse. Right now we are damn close to it as it is. Banks are holding on by a thread, and we haven't even seen the start of the default flood that is coming. The US is at or very close to the max amount they can borrow, so throwing more and more money at this is gonna be a moot point soon. Unless the economy gets going, this ship is gonna sink
I agree, we do need to open but people are dying because they refuse to follow the recommendations of medical authorities. Some refuse to wear masks and masks provide protection to others-not to the wearer. I guess we can't mandate that everyone wear a mask because the courts will side with the one that doesn't until enough people have died. I'm not an economist but it looks like lives or money-which is the most important? Both my wife and I wear a mask on our infrequent but rushed visits to the grocery store. We're in and out as quickly as possible.

You know, I’m pretty proud of our country right now. Sure, there have been some stupid things done by folks that we elected, but there have been some really great things done by big corporations that quickly retooled to make ventilators, masks, sanitizer, etc. And there has been innovations by small businesses and individuals. High school technology classes learned how to make 3D printed parts for masks and such. Teachers found new ways to work with their students. Churches have found new ways to worship without being able to gather together.

All in all, I think we have done pretty well.

Now it’s time to get back to shooting stuff!
