For pig hunting, i've used 154gr Tula soft points. Got the job done in one shot every time. Of course havnt hunted in about 8 years now so there might be better cartridges in 7.62x39 now.

I used 62gr M855 ball ammo once. Wouldnt do that again. Took extra love to put one down

My cousin uses Sharps .25-45 for hogs and loves it. On the expensive side though.

Grendel!! Cheap and effective. And yes I am biased
The only thing I have against the Grendel is that it seems to need the longer barrel length to reach it's full potential. I really want to stick with a 16" barrel if possible.

I need to look at the ballistics a little more.

I’m assuming AR platform.

There is nothing 7.62x39 will do that 300BLK won’t do as well or better. The only advantage 7.62x39 has is cheap a$$ ammo. And the “Good” stuff is just as high as the similar performing 300BLK ammo.

The only thing you need to change a 223 AR to a 300 BLK is a barrel. No need for another bolt, odd and lower capacity magazines, having to find the right trigger/spring and extended firing pin combo to make that cheap a$$ ammo that was so “desirable” because of the price work reliably, etc.

All that said, I have the parts and ammo for a 7.62x39 that I need to put together. Because I just wanted to cover a caliber I don’t now own.

I think 6.8SPC or 6.5 Grendel is the right way to go for hogs if you think you need more ump in a AR platform without reloading the ammo.

How many rounds do you fire a year out of an AR15 now? I didn’t fire more than 500 rifle caliber out of mine in the last year. Likely less. (Probably a couple thousand pistol caliber)

I was gonna suggest building yourself something in 243. Back when I hunted, it was my go-to AR platform. Still a fun shooter, but in a 16" barrel, no telling how fast and flat it would be.

I’m partial to the 7.62x39 AR. It’s my go to for hog hunting now. In my case I want to do it with something everyone hates on and what better way to that than with a communist round fired through an American classic rifle. I routinely shoot out to 300 yards with mine. My two cents.

If I’m going to build a non-.308 AR-10, I’d lean toward a .260 or 6.5 Creedmoor. But a 243 would be pretty cool.

How did the barrels last on the 243?

AR-10 platform?

Yep. That Remington R25 seemed high to me at $1200, so I built one way back when for just over $900. Saved on that rattle can finish lol

Haven't shot out the Armalite barrel yet... give or take 1500 rnds. She still grouped nice and tight last time out of the safe.

Yes, the AR-15 platform in particular. I have no desire to move into the AR-10 platform at this time.

The reason that I have never really considered the 300 BO is that I have a 30-30 (I would just use that but a semi-auto for hogs is what I would prefer for multiple follow up shots) and I want a caliber that is not similar to what I already have.

I would be happy with a bolt gun for deer and that would definitely open things up for me but I want one rifle for both hogs and deer.

The "cheap a$$" ammo is one of the reasons I started thinking about the 7.62x39 again. I know that some people use an extended firing pin to shoot the hard primer stuff.

I really don't know if I need more than a 5.56 for hogs and deer because I haven't had a shot at either one yet with an AR but I know that I may be pushing the limits with a 75 grain bullet and I'm just looking at options.
