Yesterday, I made a spur of the moment trip up to my place to mow, check cameras, and fill feeders, but since the grass is pretty much dead, I ended up not having to mow thus having “spare” time. I decided to attempt to get my money’s worth out of my fishing license. I’ve been hunting on the Salt Fork for 16 years and never even attempted to catch a fish, but I was shocked to literally get a bite or catch a fish every single cast for two hours. I ended up keeping and cleaning 9. I went during the heat of the day today, but I’m going back tomorrow but early in the morning while it’s cooler.:thumb:

So I need somebody to school me on these fish.
This has happened to me on 2 other occasions in the same spot on Lake Ponca. But this time I remembered to take my phone with me!
I catch 2 (what I am calling sunfish), usually catch the first one within the first 20 minutes of showing up at the water. Here is the first one.

Then within the next 30 minutes I catch another, but the second one has a much smaller mouth, so much smaller that I can't even get my thumb in there to hold it so I can work on the hook.
Here is the pic pic of the second.View attachment 165501
This is actually the first time that the two fish were not somewhat close to the same color. But all 3 times, the second fish I caught I couldn't get my thumb into the mouth to hold on to it.
So my question is, what is the 2nd fish that has the really small mouth.

Okay, I had the same question about these coming out of my own pond. I did some research and this is how this works. The fish with yellow tinges on their fins and a larger mouth, but a spot like a bluegill are a hybrid. They look like this:

They’re a hybrid from a male bluegill:

And a female green sunfish:

You can pinpoint the green sunfish because of the little green/blue stripes under its eyes and between its mouth and gill plate.

They’re very aggressive, but they also reproduce at a rate that’s 90% male. This means that they can reproduce between themselves but not at a large rate.

Good info Oklahomahunter!

Thanks. It took a little investigating. I guess they’re a stocked fish in mostly eastern lakes and ponds. What I found said they were popular east of the Mississippi River. I grew up catching them in creeks and farm ponds but we never knew what they were exactly. I wanted to know a couple of months ago because I’m about to rework a pond on our farm and that’s going to start by pulling out a large number of fish within a certain size range. These guys are on the list to come out along with a large portion of bass up to 14”-16” and a fair number of channel cat.
