Okay, I had the same question about these coming out of my own pond. I did some research and this is how this works. The fish with yellow tinges on their fins and a larger mouth, but a spot like a bluegill are a hybrid. They look like this:

They’re a hybrid from a male bluegill:

And a female green sunfish:

You can pinpoint the green sunfish because of the little green/blue stripes under its eyes and between its mouth and gill plate.

They’re very aggressive, but they also reproduce at a rate that’s 90% male. This means that they can reproduce between themselves but not at a large rate.

Thanks! I’ve always wondered about the difference.

These identifying factors will help identify which sunfish you have.
The hybrid copper nose bluegill are very popular in the SE part of the country. I have some in my pond. With feeding, they can grow to over a pound in weight.

KEY IDENTIFYING FACTORS

Photos in the link.
Before we begin identifying these sunfish species, it's important to understand the areas of external anatomy that aid in positive identification.
Mouth size compared to body size
Upper jaw length compared to eye
Opercular flap length
Opercular flap color and margin color
Opercular flap flexibility
Pectoral fin length
Body coloration
In many situations, these fish will also hybridize, so some traits can lead you to two or more paternal species.

This morning wasn’t very productive. I only caught about 10, but they were all dinks and got thrown back. I went back this afternoon and caught A BUNCH, but I only kept 11. These catfish love Bill’s stink bait.:thumb:
I’m going to try again tomorrow.

You fishing a river or a pond/lake? I’m about to start setting jugs in a few weeks and stock the freezer up.

I’m fishing on the Salt Fork. My wife and daughter gave me a new fish cooker for Father’s Day, and I’m trying to gather up a few filets to try out in it.

That’s awesome! Yeah, I’ve been perving on those style coolers for a while now. Looks like you’ve got them down and are loading up the freezer for a fish fry soon. I’m hoping to get to the N. Canadian soon, but that just depends on work.

Did a little fishing on Saturday. Caught some hybrid on topwater and then caught some on shad. Brought home a few to eat. For about an hour and a half it was non stop action. The boat ramp action was also entertaining to an extent, until it was holding me up. 1 lady was pulling a big fancy tritoon up against the flow of traffic and her husband was whistling at her. She stopped and they shouted back and forth a little bit. She kept hollering I can't hear you. She finally got out with a Miller Lite in hand. Intoxicating beverage consumption did not surprise me.
