.40 S&W Caliber

Not sure if this is the right forum for discussion, but just wanted to ask the question.
Why such the non popularity of this particular caliber/ 40 S&W? Hasn't it been around a while?
Pro's Con's?
Really thought this might get moved to a different forum, but wasn't positive. (please forgive)

Actually, the .40 S&W hasn't been around that long when compared to other rounds like 9mm, .45 ACP, .357, .380, etc. It was developed after the 1989 Miami-dade shootout as a midway between 9mm and 10mm. With newer advancements in ammo, its been dropped more and more so for either 9mm or .45 ACP as people argue that it is either too snappy when compared to 9mm or not powerful enough when compared to .45 ACP. Its the red headed stepchild of the ammo world.

Its still a good round. I carry one myself (well, I switch between .40 and 9mm).

It's been around about 30 years. It was pretty popular for a while, but I think when law enforcement agencies started migrating back to 9mm, it lost a lot of popularity.

Personally, I think it's a good cartridge if you can handle it. It costs more than 9mm, and capacity is less, so it's probably debatable whether the advantages are enough to compensate for those cons.

Used to be one of the most popular choices for uspsa.
PCC and carry optics has taken quite a large chunk of limited shooters away.

.40 S&W is obviously dropping out of favor with a lot of LE departments for a variety of reasons, but there are way too many of them in circulation for the round to die off.

My Take.....

One of the single biggest advantages of the 40 (and .357sig) is that when everyone else has bought up all the 9mm, you can usually (I said usually) find .40.

The other side of that coin though is that a place that only stocks popular calibers will have 9mm, they may or may not have .40 S&W, and they probably won't have .357 sig.
