The water plume made it look even more impressive imo. As far as the grain facility, those are an achievement to build as well as when they attempt to tear them down, quite a process and not easy. The fact that they were almost full helped them withstand the blast.

We've had to use a cutting torch in a flat grain storage building before that was only about 20% full, not really something I'd like to do again.

I know you know this already. Just info related to the thread
All grain elevators have dust collection systems as well as other facilities like sugar producers.
Big explosion back on the East coast a few years back with a sugar factory not related to the silos.
It was dust on top of the AC ducting along with some related issues you wouldn’t think no of
Coal fired power plants are especially vulnerable
We had to attend monthly training sessions to understand why along with inviting local fire departments so they would understood high pressure water during a fire would create the potential for an explosion or a bigger fire.

Misting is the only way to fight a dust fire to wet it.
High pressure creates a cloud of dust that is explosive.

Yes this was preventative hose down and ventilation in our situation. Hopefully will never have to fight one.

I was working at the Wichita Airport the morning the grain elevator exploded.

My coworker and I heard a BOOM... then a series of 6 more rapid succession booms. We walked out the back door and saw a white cloud rising from the grain elevator to the SE. We later heard two men were killed. Apparently, there was a spark or the conveyor belt overheated.

IIRC several died and one was missing over a month before he was found.
