Doublecheck your credit report first before you start searching. Know your credit score before you talk to anyone.

And as others have recommended, check with a Credit Union. I'm a member of USAA and have gotten my last two loans through them and used their car buying service.

I drove 70,000+ miles a year for over 5 years as did the wife.
My 78 Nova got that many in less than 1.5 years.I still have that engine ..It is in my 57 Chevy but served duty in my 47 dodge truck and originally came from a 1969 wagon with 100,000 miles on it.
350" and it has over 400,000 miles on the thing.

Oil changes every 2 weeks.
I hear ya on the MPG ..especially if funds are tight.
I do drive my 95 corolla often with 30-38 MPG and 340,000 miles on it now.
Most I have seen was 850,000 miles on a 1998 Corolla No repairs.
Just oil and filters.
Driving instructor car. Ran like new.
My 82 Mustang got 27 MPG with 200" six with automatic trans 376,000 miles and I retired it.

I will put the miles on a car and get my money back out of them.

RCB and TTCU are the best lenders I know of in our area. I have a friend that has had at least a couple of auto loans from RCB for less than 2% APR in the past few years. You also might find out what model years get the best rates and try to find a deal based off of that, unless the 2013 is a steal.

Too be honest, I usually get prequalified through my credit union just to get a baseline of interest/amount/terms and then I let the dealer finance guy find me something better (if you’re going through a dealer).

Last time I bought a car I got 1.5% lower than my credit union was going to give me. Just gotta shop and compare.
This is a good idea. If you haven't, download Credit Karma and see what your score is. If its good you should have no issue getting a low rate. Last couple times I went for an auto that needed financing. I qualified at TTCU and then told the finance guy at the dealer. If you can beat this you can run my credit. If not proceed with your spiel on warranties that I wont buy. If you were going with a new ride. Most manufactures can get 1.9 to 0% depending on vehicle.

Just remember buying a car is up to 3 individual transactions. 1st Price of car you are buying. 2nd financing rate and 3rd value of a trade if you have one. All three should be negotiated individually.

I've wondered about the new car deals-$3000 cash if you finance with their people and then after the deal is made-go to your credit union for a lower rate. Personally, I go with my credit union on any deal because I can control how much goes in on the payment-I can pay extra or simply pay it off in a matter of months and the CU doesn't complain or give me a penalty pay-off.

I’ve never had a dealer beat the credit union on the age of cars I’ve bought. And this is the newest car I’ve ever purchased.

CFCU has their rates posted, and 2013 is the cutoff for the lowest used car rate for them at 3.24%. I found 2.9% at RCB, but that was for 2015 or 2016 and newer which is out of the budget unless it has a ton of miles.

So, side question... Has anyone here had experience with the 2012+ toyota sedan hybrid system? The 2.5L 4 cyl hybrid that's also used in the Camry?

I was looking at the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Kia Optima Hybrid, both 2013+ because they seemed to fall in my price range more consistently. However the appeal of the Toyota is that it would be expected to last longer, and Toyota has been successfully building hybrid electric cars for over 15 years now.

I second this. I've had excellent dealings with Tinker Federal Credit Union. I wasn't a member before getting my auto loan. Great rates, and some nice perks being a member now.
Well I wouldn't go so far as to say TFCU, I hate them. Last year I stopped in Ardmore and got a $5 burger, card denied! I called them and was told it was because I was out of town! And about 20 other things I want go into. Well maybe one, made a deposit a while back in drive thru and girl got snappy with me and told me I had to take my sunglasses off for her to make the DEPOSIT!
