You don't even need propane or charcoal,,,
A good wood fire is enough to melt aluminum cans.

My FIL did it for decades using yard trash for the fire.

What in the hell is he gonna do with a bunch of smelted aluminum? He already drags up useless crap that I gotta throw out when he's not looking. Ya'll don't understand...this man is a dumpster diver. He's from that era when they used everything and threw nothing away. Digging crap out of dupsters is how he got started with the damned cans!

Actually I think that is quite a shame. That's what kept his interest up and kept him going every day. We all need something no matter how insignificant that is important to us. It's wonderful that he is doing so well at his age and hopefully he will be able to find anther interest or hobby.

Yep, this is a generational thing. People who grew up during the depression don't throw anything away. They might need it, or be able to make something they need out of it. My mother had five feet of left over guttering she had saved for... who knows. She wanted to know if the gutter installers could use it. I told her they might haul it away for you, but they install seamless guttering, they are not going to try to splice five feet of used guttering into new gutters.

If he likes to garden, a greenhouse could keep him occupied more/less year 'round. One can be built fairly cheap by using wood or PVC pipe for the frame and covering it with heavy plastic (be sure to paint PVC, as the UV in sunlight will cause it to quickly deteriorate). Year 'round fresh veggies would also be a plus.

Just a thought. :drunk2:

My father in law lives with us and has for the last 7-8 years. He's the ripe old age of 91. He left school in the 5th grade to go to work to support his family, as most young men did during the great depression. He never graduated high school, doesn't have a college degree. He has been a cowboy his entire life. His biggest claim to fame is that he used to work on the Chapman ranch with legendary actor, the late Ben Johnson.

He doesn't go to the coffee shop to hang out with all the other old timers, because frankly, he's so much older than them. He has literally outlived most everyone his age. He stays somewhat active, which keeps him out of the nursing home. He's always tinkering around the house, doing this and that, just to stay busy. He ALWAYS has a pair of leather work gloves in his back pocket, ready to work.

Something he has done for the last several years, is collect aluminum cans and sell them. He has a few people in town who also saves cans for him, so he stays pretty busy. Imagine how upset he was, when over the weekend, he and I took his load of cans to the local recycling place and they told him that they are not buying cans any longer.

:uhwhat:

So, we went to another recycling center. Same response.

:uhwhat::uhwhat:

So, I called other recycling centers in our surrounding area, and they all said the same thing.

What the hell? :ugh2: Is this again the curse of the Covid? I thought "going green" was the big thing nowadays. Hell, we've been doing this for years. But sadly, I guess no more.

I can't help ya BUT I did enjoy the story,, Thank you.. Did you try Ball pipe in Shawnee ?
PS, blame the blue rats, they're good at F***ing up everything they get their hands on..
