Technically, both are ceramics. Porcelain is made with a more refined clay (thank you, Google) and is more durable (and I assume more expensive) than ceramic tile.

Both are available in glossy or matte finish, so that's not really an indicator of which one you have.

lol, yes, I know. Technically apes and man are the same because we both walk upright on hind legs. LOL
They arent the same because they have different qualities with brittleness and thickness and ? Thats where I was scetchy on how to drill it. Will ceramic drill the same as porcelan ? I dont know that. I also know ceramic tile is more likely to have a gloss finish. Maybe thats because the gloss went out of style but ceramic tile is not the industry standard at this time, I know that.

@CHenry When I had to install grab bars in my folks' shower after my dad's bout with meningitis a few years ago, I bought some drill bits specifically made for drilling through tile. I'm pretty sure I got them at Home Depot, but I can't recall the name, and I think they're still at my folks' place (they're not in the tool bag I have with me here).

I think these are them, although I remember the ones I bought having more of a teardrop profile:

They worked very well, and have subsequently been used on various types of porcelain/ceramic tiles with no ill effect.

It may sound odd to a lot of you younger folks, but you can fall also and a grab rail may save your tutu or patootie. Sure you can recover a little quicker than an older person but you can hurt just as well. Besides, you can use the grab rail to hang things on. It's cheap insurance.

I use mine as towel bars.
