So I have a wireless Samsung sound bar and 6” subwoofer setup connected to my gaming computer, and while it puts out an impressive amount of sound and bass, I’m hankering for a more tub-thumping low end. As in, bass that shakes pictures loose from the walls and makes my fillings fall out. No separate amp or pre-amp. Can anyone recommend a good subwoofer with larger cone, say 8” to 12” that would do the job?

Bigger drivers have a different sound then smaller counterparts. Sealed, ported have a big impact also. Personally I like the sound of sealed 12” for most music. Theater ported and the bigger the better. I’d guess gaming would be the same also especially since your hearing is what it is

Since your a handy take a look at some of the kits from parts express You might enjoy putting something together

My DJ system has an EV ETX18, it will make your fillings fall out... :)

Seriously though for big effects, you need big cones, they typically aren't as musical as smaller drivers, but they will deliver the hit for effects.

The issue will be cost, the sweet spot is the 10"-12" powered subs for home theater, I see them used all the time for $100-$150. I don't see much in the 15" class for sale used, and the cost of them can be significant. You could also widen the search for powered DJ subs, I sold my old JBL 18" subs recently, I ended up getting about $400 each though.

Thanks for the advice, folks. I did think about building my own subwoofer enclosure, but those invariably require an AV receiver for input/output. I went that route with my previous computer, and while it was effective, it also cluttered up my desk. My current setup is a sound bar that I plug into a wall and pair wirelessly with the computer, and the subwoofer that comes with the bar also plugs into the wall, and it automatically pairs with the bar. Presto, sound and bass, sweet and simple - that’s what I want.

From my research, it seems the bar/sub combo typically is set up at the factory to communicate specifically with each other. Bringing a new sub into the mix generally won’t work, but I’m going to see if Samsung, the maker of my current bar/sub combo, offers a bigger sub that will pair successfully with my bar. Otherwise I may be looking at a new bar/sub combo.

O4L, my kind of gaming is a tank simulator with self-propelled artillery, and I want to feel the effects of something like this while gaming -

I've got a Logitech system I've had for years that has held up well and has SERIOUS oomph.

This is actually it, it's not available anymore, but I wouldn't hesitate to look into their newer stuff. It may not be as good as the "oldschool", I dunno, but it could be just as good or better. It's a starting point, anyways.

I've had this system for at least 15 years now and it still kicks ass.

Years ago when I was into computer gaming the Logitech systems like above were the best for bass and felt sound. I am sure they are still quite good. Another nice setup that would be pretty costly would be the Sonos sound bar with optional sub. That thing is the bomb for home entertainment.
