The commissioners must’ve lived all over, then. There aren’t a whole bunch of gravel public roads left in my county; there are plenty of gravel private roads, but most all of the county roads have been paved for years.

Maybe they just settle for having the good roads now.

You need to get a little farther out from the city! SW Okla. still full of gravel and dirt roads.

I'm just talking about the county where my house is, not all of them. I used to have endless hours of fun driving up and down the gravel roads in my county, but those roads are all paved now. And for some of them, paving was not an improvement...

Here, but occasionally There.
Can confirm. They’re still caliche.

You need to get out further. LOTS and LOTS of roads are just dirt, not caliche.

When we were on the farm, the county came out and put some caliche on the road to the bosses' home, which was just over a 1/4 mile from the highway. It was harder to maneuver that road after the caliche was put on vs what it was with regular dirt road. With regular dirt road, when it got wet, all we had to do was "find the ruts" and we could get to the house. With the caliche, we tended to slip all over the road.
