The bolt is going to be a much easier way to do it. 7/8-14 is fine thread for that size and not as common as ordinary 7/8-9 bolts which aren't real common either.
Threading dies for cutting or rethreading is going to be hard to source unless you go to an industrial supply like mentioned upthread. A rethreading die might actually thread the plastic you have but they are meant for cleaning up existing threads. If you want to cut threads from scratch you can forget about that in ANY kind of metal even if you did find the stock size needed. Yes, you need to turn your stock as taps and dies don't cut the crest of the thread.

After the suggestion of using a bolt and a short unproductive Easter egg hunt for the bolt while I was out yesterday, it gave me an idea.
I was digging through some of the stuff I haven’t used in a few years and found a Lee 30 carbine combo die that has a small diameter insert almost perfect for the size of the camera lead. A piece of duct tape wrapped around the lead should center it and hold it in place.
Now, I need to fabricate a mount to attach the camera to the frame of my press.
