First I want to apologize if this has been covered I am sure yall get tired of answering these questions. I am looking into getting a suppressor and have read other posts on how to get them, thanks for all the helpful info! The reason I want a suppressor is to manage the hog population on my ranch in Texas. I will be using it along with a night vision attachment to my scope. (In Texas you can hunt hogs 24/7 365) My question is if I get a suppressor here in OK can I take it to Texas and still be legal? If I cannot cross state lines with it can I apply for one in Texas as an OK resident, and just keep it at my Parent's house? Thanks for all the info, you guys help out a ton!

You do not need approval via form 5320.20 to transport a suppressor or AOW across state lines. Just be sure it is legal to have one in the state you are going to. I believe it is legal to use a suppressor in Texas to hunt NON game animals like hogs so you should be good!

Here is a link to the form. It has the instructions on the second page. You are only required to fill it out for DD, MG, SBR, and SBS. Not suppressors or AOWs.

http://www.atf.gov/forms/pdfs/f532020.pdf

I'm pretty sure you can't take any animal in OK with a suppressor though.

Not an official answer but... If it's like a Class 3 weapon you must notifiy ATF when and where you are taking it. I have never taken mine out of state so I'm not sure. Hopefully someone else will chime in who is more knowledgeable.

Nevermind. I see that someone did...

I have transported a can to TX, Dustin's answer is correct.

I asked my Class III Dealer before I did. He indicated a can, or AOW is OK. An SBR requires prior approval from the ATF.

It is my understanding that you do NOT need a form 5320.20 to transport a suppressor or AOW across state lines.

HOWEVER, I would say that it is a good idea to have one.

Why? Let's just say that you are driving along and get pulled over by Barney. And he sees that mean ole silencer in your car/truck. He starts telling you that you can't have one and you hand him your 5320 telling you that you have ATF approval for transport.

I would play it safe. You can fill in the 5320 to 1 Jan to 31 Dec of whatever year you want and be safe for anytime you want to travel.

Getting the 5320s are no big deal. I used to think it was till I did it. I knew that I didn't need one for the suppressors, but got them anyway. I could just see getting pulled over with the load I usually pack in the truck for a good shoot.

Got to admit that 5320s might be the least of my worries if I get stopped by Barney. Course if I get stopped by some of you guys on this list I'd probably spend the entire afternoon shooting the **** about what I had and popping a brewski after work!!

I agree too that it further covers your behind. You're supposed to be covered for interstate transportation by the Gun owners protection act of 1986. (GOPA1986)

A lot of law enforcement will have no idea what that is. I admit I had no idea as an officer what a Form 1 or 4 were till I got a machinegun myself. Class III stuff was not covered in the academy. With the popularity for all the fun stuff growing like it is, they need to.

I agree. Fill one out for the suppressor for planned trips (you can do it for a year at a time too). But if something comes up and you don't have a form or time for a form. Don't hesitate to take it. Just make sure your destination is legal, keep it put away and your mouth shut until you get there.
