Me and a buddy or two are going yote hunting on Thursday. I have never been real successful at it, so I was hoping some of you pro's could hand out some tips. We have distress calls, howling calls and such, no decoys, sadly.

Thursday morning sounds like a great day for it....cold and not much wind. Think of it like deer and try to get into an area where you think the coyotes are without them smelling you. Set up with some open area downwind as they will more times than not, circle to try to smell you. Sit close together with one watching down wind and one up wind. The sound you make is not as important as the rhythm. Listen to some veteran callers on youtube and just try to imitate them. Call for 30 seconds and then shut up for a couple minutes and repeat. I like to call quietly at first as you might have walked in real close to a coyote or cat and do not know it and too loud will blow them out of the area. Start quiet and be ready to shoot when you start calling as every once in awhile one will be on you in seconds. After a couple times of quiet, get loud to reach the far ones. Call an area for 20 minutes if you think coyotes and stay longer if you think it might hold bobcats as they will sneak in slow sometimes. Good luck and let us know how you do.

Wear a face mask. Sit in cover to break up your outline. Sit quiet and still. Have your buddy sit somewhere else looking a different direction unless you are going to video it. Have a challenge and answer with your buddy when you are done calling. Do a whistle or something and wait for him to whistle something back, if he doesn't he may be getting ready to shoot so wait a little bit and whistle again, of coarse he may just not be able to hear you. I usually don't like hunting with other people, but the extra set of eyes can help, sometimes when me and my dad go together, he will see a coyote sneaking up to me when I am calling and I may never even see him or get a shot. Leave your scope on the lowest power or right next to it. Wear camo gloves. When you see a coyote coming in, stop calling. Unless he loses interest then call softly. Once you shoot one, stay quiet for a moment and asses the area, then call some more. I've gotten 5 doubles by just sitting quiet and calling another 49 seconds or so. Coyotes travel in pairs and for some reason, even if they hear the shot, they sometimes will come in anyways. Take pictures!!!!!

I have an E-caller that i use. I hunt for cats mostly. I start out with the volume low and work it up. I let it play non stop cause im cat hunting. If i call a yote in, 90% of the time it will be within 3 min of the time i turn the call on. Cats take longer unless he's right there. I hardly ever go more than 100 yard from the road. Just get out of site of the truck. #1 stay STILL!!!!! Get cumfy, back against a tree and one knee up with your gun on that knee. I hunt thick cover, I use a shot gun 3.5" #4s. I can roll a cat or yote at 50 yards. I have educated a lot of yotes. I hardy ever shot them when i started calling cats. Its getting very hard to call one in around my area.

be sure to be quick...when the coyotes come to the call....say 10 to 20 yds..turn it off........this will get it to stop and try to figure out what happened and give you a chance for a shot....GOOD LUCK AND DON'T GIVE UP

Keep it simple. That would be my advice.imhntn said it pretty well and he knows what he's doing. The only thing I would say is if you do kill a coyote or have one hang up on you, keep calling.I go to a coyote or pup distress immediately after a shot is fired. Seen alot of blown stands that could have possibly produced a double after the first coyote is killed when the shooter jumps up and wants to high five everyone.
Since you live in Broken Arrow, I will be at the Bass Pro January 12th at 7:00 p.m. for a calling seminar. If you can make it I would like to meet you.

Great advice! Follow the tips he gave you and you will improve your odds.
