A Technical Look at the Gewehr 88/05'

Hello, I've not done an all-original article in a while, and I miss it. I hope you find it helpful. If you have trouble viewing this, you may see it at http://smith-sights.com/tech-look-gew88 . There are multiple JPEGs below and one large JPEG at the link. You may right-click-save-as if you...

    Just picked up a Mosin.

You're not the only one. I sold my carbines in favor of full-length rifles. Regards, Josh

    Brass Shining Made Easy!

Hello, I was playing with different methods of shining brass. Wet tumbling, I used 2 cups water and added one tablespoon lime juice. This is the result: I hope this helps someone! Regards, Josh

    Mosin Nagant m91/30 Mods

Hello, If the magazine makes contact with the receiver, even with my shims installed, then it's a good idea to use the magazine shims. Otherwise, don't. That's probably the same advice you got on Gunboards (good folks) but I'm repeating it, just in case. I do apologize for any wait...

    Mosin Nagant m91/30 Mods

Hello, I take it you got the shims I sent OK, didn't you? We know your email doesn't go through to me for whatever reason, but if you'd like to give a Finn HV mag a spin, I'll trade you even money for yours that has stripped threads. Contact me here or on that other forum. Regards, Josh

    Mosin Rear Peep... Whatcha' Think?

And sorry for the pics above not showing up. Photobucket is having problems with their Pro accounts, which I have. The pics should be back up shortly, according to them. Regards, Josh

    Mosin Rear Peep... Whatcha' Think?

The existing ghost ring is about 0.125". This aperture shown is 0.094. I don't really like the 0.094" as it just falls in between ghost ring and not-ghost-ring, and if I go to production, the standard aperture size will be about 0.063 or so to start with, anyway. I still like the ghost ring...

    Mosin Rear Peep... Whatcha' Think?

Hello, I'm currently in the office/workshop. Orwell is on internet radio, and I'm filling sight orders. I've also prototyped an interchangeable aperture rear peep. The first size is 3/32", which is my favorite size peep sight. Pictures to follow later tonight or sometime tomorrow. Regards...

The Awaited Rigby-Style Mosin Rear-Sight Range Report!

Ronny, I'll do that as soon as I can. I've done sub-MOA with this rifle, but unknowns include the ammo as well as (as you mentioned) the shooter being sick, and inclement weather conditions. On the other hand, I didn't have to work for these groups. With standard tangent sights, this group...

The Awaited Rigby-Style Mosin Rear-Sight Range Report!

Hi Folks, I've been asked by folks here and elsewhere for a range report for this sight. Conditions were about 34F, light wind, and overcast with snow flurries turning into snow showers. Distance was 75 or 80 yards. Though I lasered it at 75 yards, my shooting position changed...

    Mosin Rear Peep... Whatcha' Think?

Please excuse the surroundings and the picture quality. I did this at home, not the shop, in response to some concerns that the cocking piece will move on the x and y axis and not only the z axis. The first part demonstrates that I have a standard sear, while the second and third parts give...

    Mosin Rear Peep... Whatcha' Think?

Hello, Why? There's the horizontal slack adjustment to address that. Please explain? Thanks, Josh

    M 91/30

Hello, The twist is 1:9.5". The original bullet weight was 212 grains, cupro-nickel plated. I find mine to really like SMKs and Hornady Match BTHP, but as long as a bullet is uniform over-stabiliztion won't be noticed by the average shooter, or even most excellent shooters. Seems to be...

    My Mosin

I want to advertise here -- I make those for a living. A rather large selection. Been trying to get ahold of someone to give me a price quote! I tried floating the barrel, but it just started shooting in circles and opened up a little. The cork is only at the front node that the Russian...

    My Mosin

Hi All, I'm hoping this might help some folks. I apologize in advance for the screw heads; they were taken apart literally hundreds of times. I've since replaced them and found a proper bit for my torque wrench that will not cause damage to the new ones, even over the long-term...

    Mosin questions

Hello, You will find the best quality were made between wars. Look for pre-1939 on the shank. A Finn is preferable, but if you don't mind a little work you can make a 91/30 with good bore and good crown shoot like an M39. By "a little work" I mean nothing more than making metal shims by...

Wondering if I should buy this gun? Col 1903

You tell him you had a feller who wanted to look it over for you? I only wonder because if he's in the area and only let go of the pics when you said that (or did he?) then perhaps he's someone us local to him need to watch. I'll get ahold of my friend in Swayzee and tell him it's a no-go...
