One rifle to do it all - home defense, hunting, competition shooting, etc.? An AR-15 in 5.56 probably would be my choice to cover all these bases adequately.
If you can slip a thin, flat piece of metal underneath the ring for protection, the dremel could still work. I’d be concerned about heat generation, though.
