Welp I'm sure some of you guys have seen my post, etc. about the Surgeon I had and couldn't decide between it and a remington...well...I went and exchanged it for a Surgeon 1086 long action and plan on a .284 Winchester...

Here's some pics. The plan is a timney trigger, mcm stock, rock barrel, etc. With me I'm sure I'll change my mind a dozen times...

To shoot long 180 vld's it does. I've thought about the 6.5 also...and still thinking, but I want to launch heavier bullets for long range hunting than the 6.5 can offer...

Why 284 over 6.5x284? better barrel life and heavier bullets is why I built my 284. I think the 284 is a good choice I built my before all the LR guys started going back to them it's my hunt everything rifle and love it! it is a little harsh on these little Okie deer though  Later,

The .284 is one of the highest rated deer cartridges around. I went with a 7mm-08 recently, simply because I had a short Rem 700 receiver available,. One could call the .284 a 7mm-06, but I have never seen or heard of that designation. Just a 30-06 case necked down to 7mm. They kick a good bit less than the .270, other things being equal, and perform a bit better.

There is a gunsmith in Jones, OK (kind of far northeast OKC) doing business as Mechanical Accuracy. He is excellent, long established, and while busy, is usually pretty quick (for a gunsmith) on completion. CB

The 284 Win is a totally different case than a 06! it has the same head dia. but the case is a much larger dia. close to that of a 7WM, a 30-06 case necked down to .284 would be the 280 Remington probably the best cartridge out there for the guy who can only have one rifle. Later,

That's what I've been swinging back and forth on the 284win and 280 ackley...I'm afraid I couldn't seat 180 vlds out long enough on the 280 ai though..
