Since it is a long action, it can be anything with a 0.532 case head. Here is a list of cartridges with casehead size on Savage Shooter forum: http://savageshooters.com/SavageForum/index.php/topic,14935.0.html. The beauty of the Savage is that you can switch our the boltheads with just a little technical know-how. My long action Savages maybe be a 223, 22-250, 22-250AI, 6BR, 6mm Rem, 308, 30BR, 6mm Ackley, or a 300 WM depending on the season... I shoot them all as single shots with a follower and don't worry about the mag box..Luck with your

I have a long action Savage that is now a .338-06. Great caliber for anything up to but only marginally including the big bears.

Barrel change is very simple. Here's a very good site for more information:

Although there is factory ammo in this caliber, you really need to reload to derive maximum benefit from this very flexible rifle.

It was once very popular in Alaska because you could hunt small deer and have some solids in your pocket in case you had to defend against a bear. Some of the loads come within 150 fps of the .338 Win Mag with 'way less recoil. Mine shoots one ragged hole at a hundred yards.
