Has anyone taken one of these exams for state employment recently? I was notified by email that I meet the requirements for a couple of different state jobs, and that the next step is merit testing. Is there anything cosmic that I need to worry about? Seeing as there are 120 different tests that are all designed for specific career fields, I'm also forced to wonder just how in depth they test for job specific knowledge vs. skill sets necessary to do the job.

Any feedback is appreciated.

yeah I took one for about a year ago, it was for a child support specialist position. It is all on the computer and they are timed, however you have like 3-4 hours, basically a long time. Mine sucked because it involved way more math than I factored and I SUCK AT MATH BEYOND ADDING AND SUBTRACTING! LOL....

Seriously though it just depends on the job you applied for, the people who give the test act like they have a stick up thier butts. Only good thing is you will know your score and if you pass just as soon as you finish the last question and submit it.

GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS!!!!!!

Thanks for the info! I'm pretty decent at math but it's been a LONG time since I've dealt with any advanced stuff. What type of math questions were there?

It was mainly trying to calculate the amount of money someone may owe for thier support obligations. It starts out fairly easy, but as the questions go on they get more in-depth, like determining adjusted amount based on person income. This postion requires that the "specialist" be able to re-figure the support obligation on a check to check bases, because they can only take X percentage of the check for child support, you have to be able to determine the amount if the check is more or less each time. ALso you are required to know what other types of income can be included, how to set-up support methods of payment, look for errors in pay and reporting, ect.

ALL in ALL I am so glad I didn't get the job because I wouldn't be teaching special ed now, and I LOVE WHAT I DO!!!!!!!!!!!

I took a merit test several years ago. IIRC there wasn't a LOT of specialized info ... mostly an overview of the class of positions I was applying for. Do recall there was quite a bit of math also. It wasn't that big of a deal. If you have a good solid understanding of basic math you'll do okay.

Good luck!

Thanks guys,

Basic math holds no terror for me, but specialized knowledge does. Being a zoomie for the better part of a decade has me feeling institutionalized. If they ask any questions about airpower theory I'll have it made!

Did you get the job? Do you still work there? Do you work with a girl named Melissa?
