"All Vehicles Will Be Subject To Random Search," states the sign at the entrance to this state university.

The practice may have been going on for some time. This concerns me. Is it legal?

Do not post about race. It has nothing to do with race. It is about the legality of the practice and the possibility of it spreading to other campuses. Do not bash Langston University. It's not about other problems associated with Langston University either.

I'm shocked that a state college could grant itself the power to conduct random vehicle searches and no one would object.

IIRC Langston is a public institution and the college really isn't 'granting itself' the power to search vehicles....it already has the power to do so similar to the State/Feds controlling access to other property and/or an employer exercising control of it's parking areas. By entering the grounds you are granting consent.

If correct, that would be reassuring.

But they are a state university - they are listed as such on the Oklahoma State Board of Regents webpage http://www.okhighered.org/state-system/colleges-universities/list.shtml

They are state supported, as many others are. Not fully funded by, but partially funded by the State.

Sounds fuzzy but possible. Doesn't every university get funding from sources in addition to what they get from the state (grants etc.)?

Yes, funding for all state supported colleges and universities comes from other sources as well. For example, auxiliary services like food service (cafeteria or food court sales), some funds from bookstore sales, grants and contracts, facility rentals, tuition and fees, and private donations. Grant programs are often a huge source; things like Upward Bound, TRiO programs, Veteran's Upward Bound, and grants for specific things like equipment and specified programs.

The response I'm getting to the Langston University situation seems to be that people are ok with it. "Langston had a problem so they traded away their freedom and now everything is fine."

Why not do the same thing at every college? Why not random stops on all public highways? Where does this stop?

Can you provide documentation for this position??

I'd sure like to read the law that supports your statements!!
