I'm more a ball cap guy, but considering a western hat just for something different to wear with my boots. I wear a wool Filson hat in the winter, but of course that is out of the question for the summer.

So, what say ye? Any one better than the other, and why?

Is there a way to wear a hat and end up in between this:

on the formal/casual scale?

Seriously. Are you serious?

Only about halfway serious :D I'm considering a hat, but I'll go out and buy the damn hat I decide want if/when I buy one. But having not owned a I am a bit curious if there is a practical difference between felt and straw (aside from straw being much cooler for my melon).

The other half of my question is trolling OSA with pictures of that tool Bret Michaels. Seriously - who wears hats like this?

I certainly hope no one here, for their own sake.

I could be wrong but I thought there was an etiquette rule. Straw after memorial day and after labor u switch over to felt. Kinda like the white shoes thing.

i quit buying straw hats a few years ago as they seem not to last very long for me. its either a ball cap or felt hat for me. i do miss the palm leaf hat i owned. lasted about 2 years before i ruined it.
