What 10 specific items do you all consider to be the most important to overall preparedness? I know things vary with different situations, but if you were trying to prepare for all situations what are the top ten?

6. fire starters. (matches, flints, etc)

I think 3 things are necessary to survive.

1. Shelter
2. Food/water
3. Way to protect the first 2.

How you choose to do the above is up to you and can be done in many, many different ways.

However, this is what I have in my GHB (get home bag):

1. Extra mags that are loaded for my EDC + suppressor
2. First aid
3. Water in 1L container + some purification tablets
4. Compass + local map
5. Flashlight + batteries
6. Extra socks, gloves, beanie, jacket
7. Lighters
8. Power bars + 5hr energy drinks
9. Radio
10. Knife

Nice discreet well built bag to put the above in

This bag is setup to get me back home. That's it. It's not made to live out of for x amount of time. I can carry all of the above in a small to medium bag that won't weigh me down.

My opinion of preparedness would differ from most, these are the 6 areas of preparedness I focus on.
You can fill in the blanks as to what items you prefer to use to accomplish this in each category.

Food
Water
Shelter
Energy
Security
Sanitation and Health

If you talking preparedness being a well thought out backpack/go bag, that is going to differ a lot from
what you would if you had a well designed BOL. I like to think in terms of years of food and the ability
to produce more.

Water could be a filter straw or Katadine filter all the way up to a solar powered water well and a Big
Berkey filter.

Shelter could be a tent/hammock and a good lightweight insulated sleeping bag up to a cabin in the
woods or...

Energy could be light anywhere matches, a 9V battery and steel wool to an off grid solar system and a
wood burning stove for your cabin.

Security, they skies the limit.

Sanitation and health for some might be a jar of fishmox, a first aid kit and a roll of TP. Others it could be
a composting toilet and a deep larder of meds, herbs, EO and the knowledge how to use them.

I would add one more item to this list and that is community. Having some like minded neighbors / family is
great and all, but how well are they prepared and how will they react in a crisis situation.
