Looking for a little advice, I would like to get my new husband a scope for the rifle he just bought. He got a Remington 700 in .308 and I've been doing some internet browsing on what might work for it. I'm not a scope genius by any means. Sadly, after paying for a wedding and ridiculously expensive but awesome honeymoon, but budget is anything up to $300. I've been looking at a Barska 4-16x50 IR Tactical Riflescope. If someone's got one, I'd love to hear what their thoughts are. If not, I'm open to suggestions. Thanks!

Stay far, far away from Barska, NCStar, etc. Stick with Bushnell (Elite series), Burris, Nikon, Vortex, Weaver or Redfield. In your budget range, avoid gimmicks such as illuminated reticles, "tactical" turrets and fancy ranging systems. Stick with a solidly constructed scope with good light transmission.

In your price range for the rifle you listed, here are some top choices on SWFA. I highly recommend them. I can pretty much compare SWFA and Optics Planet for price and get the best deals.

http://swfa.com/Leupold-35-10x40-VX-III-Rifle-Scope-DEMO-C-P60287.aspx

The last three are demos, which allows you to get a lot more scope than you'd normally be able to in your price range. They're open box and may have some handling marks. I didn't even mention Leupold, because they're only good when you get into the VX-III range, and those are usually well above what your top dollar is. The Bausch & Lomb is a 4200 series (now called Bushnell Elite) and it's a fair step up from the Elite 3200 series. Those last two scopes normally run about $550ish.

SWFA's Demo grades are as follows:

DEMO A: Like New In Box
DEMO B: Shows Very Slight Wear From Use
DEMO C: Shows Obvious Signs of Use

The elite series that G2G recommend is a good series of scopes. Also, the Nikon Monarchs are a good choice. A lot of hunters like the Monarchs with the BDC reticle.

For the money, I'm not trying to bag on any other brands, but the Zeiss is head and shoulders above anything else at this price point. The 3-9x40 may not fit for the intended purpose of this particular rifle but if it does, the Zeiss is the scope to get.
