The New York Times, quoting American officials and others familiar with the investigation, said radar signals recorded by the Malaysian military appear to show the airliner climbing to 45,000 feet (about 13,700 metres), higher than a Boeing 777's approved limit, soon after it disappeared from civilian radar, and making a sharp turn to the west. The radar track then shows the plane descending unevenly to an altitude of 23,000 feet (7,000 metres), below normal cruising levels, before rising again and flying northwest over the Strait of Malacca toward the Indian Ocean, the Times reported.

Sounds like hijacker or passenger was at the controls. Could this story get stranger or more frightening?

A couple of interesting developments; they apparently got a ping from a communications satellite over the Indian Ocean at 0811, about 7 and a half hours after "losing" it from radar.

So they have a range from the satellite though no bearing.

The transponder was switched off just after checking out with Malaysian Air Control, they would have next checked in with Vietnam but that did not happen.

Interestingly, this occurred in a location where flight paths, north-south and east-west cross.

These actions are coordinated and complex enough so the average passenger would not be able to accomplish them.

It's certainly somewhere not flying.

They are saying on CNN right now that the transponders were deactivated before the someone in the cockpit answered "Alright, goodnight." This has led to speculation that the commandeering of 370 began almost from takeoff.
