The Islamic State has claimed on social media that it is utilizing captured Syrian pilots to learn how to fly stolen jets, according to a CNN Arabic report over the weekend. The Syrian pilots, which are part of the Syrian Armed Forces loyal to president Bashar al-Assad, had been captured after the Islamic State seized Tabqa airbase in Raqqa, Syria.

The Islamic State took Tabqa airbase after a four-day battle with the Syrian military. Tabqa is home to a plethora of fighter jets, helicopters, artillery, and large caches of ammunition. It still remains unclear how much quantity of the munitions the Syrian forces were able to secure before the remaining units evacuated the air base. According to Bill Roggio of the Long War Journal, the IS militants were able to grab at least three MiG fighter Jets. In an interview with Breitbart News, former Reagan National Security Advisor Robert McFarlane said that the Islamic State was also in possession of MANPADS (Man-portable air-defense systems), which are capable of shooting down commercial jetliners.

The report comes on the heels of recent news that Islamist fighters in Libya were able to steal eleven commercial airliners at Tripoli’s International Airport. US officials feared that the jets could be used to attack New York City and Washington, D.C. on the anniversary of the September, 11, 2001 attacks.

US President Barack Obama said in a news conference Wednesday in Estonia that the Islamic State is currently a “manageable problem,” and that “Justice will be served” for the recent execution of American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff. Obama said:

We know that if we are joined by the international community, we can continue to shrink ISIL’s sphere of influence, its effectiveness, its financing, its military capabilities to the point where it is a manageable problem. And the question is going to be making sure we’ve got the right strategy, but also making sure we’ve got the international will to do it.

This here is the most piss ignorant crap to come of this whole ISIS deal. What are they going to do? Take off from Libya, fly 9 or 10 hours without a transponder or anything and we are just going to let an unidentified airliner enter US airspace given the widespread knowledge of these stolen planes? Please. There could be a slight threat to Europe but they have robust air radar and fighter jets to counter unidentified aircraft coming from Libya in short order.

No kidding. All this ISIS flailing and fear mongering is hysterical. Yes, they are bad dudes. But they are not the biggest threat on the block and they are not on the verge of launching attacks against the continental U.S. this month, next month or even next year. The "stolen" jets are, like everything else in that region after being fought over and changing hands, currently being sh$t in, pissed on, shot up and generally abused. They don't have the sense, or ability to patch them up and fly them out.

The media, our government, and others are doing a good job using ISIS to distract us from everything else that is right around the corner.

Fiscal year mean anything? 1 October is pretty close and, since we still don't have a budget, soon we'll be bombarded with "BUDGET CRISIS" and "GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN" stories...as if nobody knew it was coming.

Stagnant growth? How is the IRS investigation going? Fast and Furious? Hmmm....Oh look, something shiny over there.

OH NOES! ISIS is coming...I better carry 10 extra mags on September 11th cuz that'll fix everything.

Just like that Malaysian jet, eh? Wonder why the US doesn't or didn't use their robust radar to tell the world where the damn thing crashed.

That's no different then thinking you need to carry an extra mag for your Glock 19 or 4 extra mags for your 1911 just for a quick trip to WalMart or MexiDonalds.

The Malaysian jet crashed in US airspace? Nice attempt at a troll but, well no, actually not a very good attempt.

Do you have an opinion on the topic or...??

Who knows where it crashed? It coulda crashed off the coast of American Samoa, Hawaii or any other US held interest in the Pacific. The US is a lot bigger then just the lower 48 states. Though I think an impending attack with a jetliner would be more likely aimed at the west coast. There are places out there where they could refuel. Not every government in the world is friendly to US. Troll on that fish bait for a while. Quit thinking inside your square box.

ICIS certainly isn't going to make it all the way to North America, and probably not Europe, but I could see a ground level below the radar attack at a US embassy in the middle east or even in Africa where radar stations are not at the level the US and Europe has.

Hitting a US embassy would not result in a large loss of life, but it would be a coup for ICIS, and would back up their claim that they are coming to the US, as embassy grounds are considered US soil if I'm not wrong.

ICIS is very savvy with their use of social media, and frankly, so far they have backed up a lot of their statements, partly because the pus$y in office has let them.

While it is unlikely, there are ways they could get those planes close enough to do damage. All they really have to do is fly them into other planes, cruise ships, etc. That would be enough to scare the hell out of people. And they may have the capability to hack those transponders to make them look like commercial jets.
