I went 40 S&W, I got the Glock 23, a ton of magazines, and thousands of rounds.
If I had it all to over again, I'd go Glock 17/35 and 9mm.

I currently own four 9mm handguns. Today I ordered extra magazines for all but one of them. Sadly, I've got ZERO 9mm ammunition. That will be the last thing I get, and when I get it, I will get it en bulk.
Late to this one, but for what it's worth, 9mm is a good choice. Other than .22s, I'm down to 2 handguns, both are 9's. I have a Kahr MK9, which I carry, and a Ruger LCR, which I got on a whim.
I had previously had the opportunity to shoot a 9mm LCR and liked it, although it had more recoil that most 9's I'd shot. Haven't shot this one yet and don't know why I wound up buying it, but if I keep it, it will be my truck gun.
This is the 3rd Kahr MK9 I've had and even though it's small, it has enough weight to handle the recoil well.
One of my all time favorites in 9mm is a CZ P-01. What a sweet shooting pistol.
Anyway, with the understanding that everyone has his own likes and dislikes, I just can't imagine any "average American shooter" dismissing a 9mm handgun because they felt that cartridge was inadequate.

Actually, he's already a better man that some fellas I've met twice his age ... he just doesn't understand quite yet that what a bunch of guys on the internet think of him is completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things ...
