anyone wonder WTF they got an axe on an airplane? I mean i guess they could be locked away some where, but an axe seems like an odd thing to include on a plane when a pocket swiss army knife is banned

Just saw on the news this morning that only the flight crew knows about the axe.
I'm thinking it was there so if the plane went down and there were survivors but the doors wouldn't open, the axe could easily be used to cut through the skin on the plane?
Just speculating.

When I retired from AAL, a short handled red fire axe was part of the permanent aircraft safety equipment, like first aid kits, portable extinguishers, etc. As I remember there was one in the cockpit and at least one more in the cabin. Used to be visible but now are probably well hidden or locked away.
