This ain't the garden of eden
There ain't no angels above
And things ain't like what they used to be
And this ain't the summer of love

To the younger generation of OSA viewers who may not have a clue who this man was; he was a baby faced killer with nine lives. To read his book will leave you troubled. He wanted to die like a Samson, with his enemies. And he got the Medal of Honor for it.

So what does that have to do with Memorial Day?

No mention of him. When I was little, he was a folk hero. No Memorial Day would pass without some allusion to what he had done. Now, the balance of Memorial Day is weighted with advertisements on Super Sales honoring our veterans. Or beaches contaminated with oil spills where excursionists are denied entry.

I guess I get it, but not sure why Memorial Day should be noted by references to a guy who survived the war, became a movie star, and died in an accident decades later.

He was certainly a hero, but his story is not the story of Memorial Day. Veteran's Day perhaps...
