Televison sucks. Reality TV really, really sucks. Do yourself a favor--carry your televsion sets to the second floor (or the roof, either will do), and then heave the blasted things as far as your strength allow. Your life will be better, I assure you.

Also, Penn & Teller: Fool Us. I love stage magic.
I haven't seen that show, but I do enjoy watching their sleight of hand--they're good enough that even if you know how the truck works they'll still fool you (like when they did the Cups and Balls trick using glass tumblers).

I used to like Les Stroud's Survivorman, mostly because he really was (usually) alone in survival situations, not with a crew standing by to bail him out if he got his butt in a sling.

And hanging around on the Internet is any better?

The only shows we really watch are AGT, Big Bang, NCIS and the blind auditions part of the Voice. We like AGT and that part of the Voice because of the talent. The judges, etc are just an annoyance we do our best to ignore.

Then I couldn't watch All in the Family, Sanford and Son................ and Lawrence Welk on Saturday evenings. The only reality anything I thought was interesting was the movie the Truman Show. But of course he had no idea he was being televised so it was "real" reality until he found out.

From Wikipedia:
Penn & Teller: Fool Us is a British-American television programme. Hosted by Jonathan Ross, Fool Us is a magic competition in which magicians perform tricks in front of American magician-comedian duo Penn & Teller. If Penn & Teller cannot explain how a trick was done, the magician or magicians who performed it win a five-star trip to Las Vegas to perform as the opening act in Penn & Teller's world-famous show at the Rio Hotel & Casino.

It was announced on 28 June 2012 that ITV had cancelled the show, despite its averaging 4 million viewers, higher than the timeslot average. After finding moderate ratings success in running the ITV-produced episodes during the summer of 2014, The CW ordered a second season of original episodes to air in 2015. The second season has been a ratings hit for The CW, giving the network its highest ratings in that time slot compared to the previous 5 years.

I watched the first two seasons of Survivor, then I swore off reality TV.

But... I've returned to the fold slightly with the introduction of Naked and Afraid on Discovery. Put aside the "naked" part for a minute. They drop a man and a woman in some of the most remote and inhospitable places on earth one could survive without cold weather gear.

They have to survive for 21 days with nothing but a fire starter and one survival item per person (in season one, they didn't automatically get a fire starter). They get REALLY cold, and really hot. They get eaten alive by bugs. They get dehydrated and they starve. They get hurt. Sometimes they get medevac'd out. For a 21 day stint, some of them will lose over 30 pounds. Some of them get diseases that require extended treatment after the show. They frequently look REALLY bad when they finish 21 days. Not all of them make it.

I can't stand contrived drama. There is drama on N&A, but it absolutely doesn't feel contrived. Cold, wet, naked and starving, you can tell the emotions get out of hand from time to time. It's interesting to watch the team dynamic (or lack thereof) between two strangers in a survival situation. Sometimes they recover, sometimes they don't. "winning" anything is never mentioned. If you make it the full 21 days, you get bragging rights.

On one episode, neither of the pair made it past a few days. They "tapped out" and went home. To fill the rest of the show, they brought in two former survivalists to finish their stint, just to prove it was possible to survive in that location.

If you haven't checked it out, I highly recommend it.
