Yeah, windows 7 and 8 are getting tracking programs now too. Simple to not get them or remove though, and while I am at it added rules to my router to block traffic to where it's being sent as well.

The updates released by Microsoft are kb3068708, kb3022345, kb3075249 and kb3080149, which basically "introduce the Diagnostics and Telemetry tracking service" for the older Windows versions. Moreover per Microsoft, these updates also "add telemetry points to the User Account Control (UAC) feature to collect information on elevations that come from low integrity levels."

The data seems to be sent to the following points:

win.data.microsoft.com
settings-win.data.microsoft.com
vortex-win.data.microsoft.com

The problem with one of the articles linked is that the "host" data is supposedly hard coded into the updates so modifying the "Hosts" file will not make a single change so this will need to be filtered at a router level.

Furthermore gHacks notes that ” these four updates ignore existing user preferences stored in Windows 7 and Windows 8 (including any edits made to the Hosts file) and immediately starts exchanging user data with vortex-win.data.microsoft.com and settings-win.data.microsoft.com.
“ These, and maybe others, appear to be hardcoded which means that the Hosts file is bypassed automatically”, gHacks explains.
