I am meeting with my small town (not Tishomingo, but a near by town) University President about being allowed to carry on campus. I've had my CCL for a while and like many here... former military, tons of training, etc. I am finishing up a masters and still have another 7 months remaining. Many of my classes are at night and I typically walk my classmates (99% female) to their cars in the parking lot.

I was wondering how many people have actually approached their college/Univ. presidents about carrying on campus (as a CCL holder) and what happened as a result. I'm sure this topic has been asked before, but I didn't have a chance today on my break to look up topic history.

Thanks!

Yeah, I wish you the best of luck. Let us know how it comes out. I don't have any personal experience, but I do not recall hearing of anyone who has been successful. There's got to be a first someday, right! Might as well be you!

I will certainly report what happens. The fact that he took my request was a step I wasn't sure I'd even get. I talked to his secretary at the office, she went in to ask.... came out and said he'd love to meet with me and talk about it. So who knows... I know the girls in my class are for it.

Good that he's willing to visit. A question I'd be asking is does the institution have adequate armed security/police on duty to fully overwatch the parking lots at the time you are escorting the ladies to their vehicles. You likely have already noticed this condition and have assessed. Just the presence of cameras alone (assuming they are there) won't do it unless there are adequate eyes on the monitors as well as provision for quick armed response to possible threats. You may not have the answer to the later yourself.

Good job, good luck.

I'd keep the "walking other students to their car" out of it and ensure the man that it is for your personal protection only. Let him know that no one but you and him will ever know you are carrying (but it sounds like you already let that cat out of the bag).

If you have already "let the cat out of the bag" an assurance that you will be discrete should help.

Your qualifications/training to handle potential problems with non-deadly force should be emphasized. I assume you carry some LE grade pepper spray.

If it looks like its necessary to further comment, you could add that you understand the law and realize that you are not a police officer just a good mature college student who cares about ones classmates.

He might even show that he can be discreet since that would show how a college student knows the difference in his homophones.

Your second comment conflicts with the first. I carry for my benefit and no one else. Having a discussion with the college president about permission to carry concealed should remain on topic. Going off topic with any comments about pepper spray or caring about classmates will only reinforce everything negative most educators already think on the subject.

The OP has made the point that he is making the effort to protect his female classmates.

If I were the Pres I would want to know the mindset of the individual before me. Would I ask about escalation of force and how the individual would handle it? You bet!!
