Worker who pulled gun to stop stabbing attack at GM Tech Center fired

WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) - An employee at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren stabbed by someone visiting the plant Wednesday.

The 52-year-old victim was hospitalized and suspect arrested by police - but the valet service supervisor with a valid CPL who pulled his gun to stop the attack, says he was fired.

Didarul Sarder, SP+ Valet Supervisor was heading into work Wednesday morning at the General motors technical center in Warren, when he heard the cry for help.

...

"The lady kept saying 'I'm dying, someone help' and it was just natural reaction," said Didarul Sarder, SP+ Valet Supervisor. "I just see this lady getting stabbed. I only had like half a second to think and I un-holstered my firearm and pointed it at her to drop the knife."

The stabbing happened right outside the main entrance of the central office building where the 52-year-old victim works.

Police say the suspect, a 32-year-old woman, came to see the employee. They argued in the lobby, then went outside where the suspect pulled a knife, stabbing her multiple times in the neck, back and abdomen.

Sarder told the woman to freeze until she was arrested by police.

FOX 2: "You probably saved this woman's life."

"I hope so, I hope she makes it," Sarder said. "Maybe those few seconds before the police arrived could be the difference between life and death."

...

The victim, identified as Stephanie Kerr, is in critical condition, and lucky the stabbing didn't go any further, according to city officials. All of which is why Sarder says he was surprised to be fired on the spot by a GM employee, then escorted off the property.

"He said, 'You shouldn't have had a firearm here,'" Sarder said. "'After this is done he needs to be escorted off the property. He's not welcome back here.'

"I was really bummed out. I got a little emotional."

Sarder, who has a valid CPL, works for a company contracted by GM. He says he started working on the grounds in December and was never informed of a no gun policy.

GM officials, however, deny firing Sarder, saying in a statement, "Because this is an ongoing investigation we cannot comment. However, we can say GM has not requested the valet be dismissed. To our knowledge the valet remains an employee of the vendor."

Police and Mayor of Warren Jim Fouts say Sarder is a hero who should be honored.

"Had it not been for his quick action and quick thinking, pulling out his concealed weapon, she might have been murdered on site," Fouts said.

Sarder has no regrets.

"I would do it all over again," he said. "If I could save this woman's life over a job. I can get another job."

Some folks here say you shouldn't get involved... that your firearm is to protect yourself and your loved ones and you should not involve yourself in something like this.

Previous versions of the SDA instructor material and the handout they are required to give students stated that, which is probably where most people got that from. The new material states the best course of action is to call 911. "In limited circumstances, however, an individual may come to the aid of another person. A critical legal difference exists between protecting someone we have a relationship with and acting on behalf of a stranger."

Thankfully OK has the law in place to protect your right to have a firearm in the parking lot.

That only changed a few years ago. I worked for Dell at the time, and they tried changing company policy to state that we couldn't have ammo in the car since they couldn't prohibit firearms. That didn't fly LOL. It should also be noted, The Outlet Mall on 40 still has signs prohibiting them on property, posted on signs as you pull in the entrances.

State law preempts that as far as the parking lot goes. Then again....Why go to an outlet mall? I hate shopping anyway. LOL

That was my point, it's in violation of the law. That law also only passed approx 5 years ago, coming up on 6 I believe, prior to that, parking lots were not specifically exempt, they waited out the whole Weyerhauser deal to see how it panned out. School parking lots only became exempt 2-3 years ago. I think I remember that OK2A or someone had a lawsuit against the mall because it's considered a civil rights violation.

So if you find yourself in a 2A situation, would you be better off with your firearm but in violation of the law, or better off dead but following said law.

Dollar Thrifty had a written policy that said you couldn't have a firearm on their property or any property adjacent to their property. There is an apartment complex next door to Dollar Thrifty Plaza and several several employees did live there. I was very happy when all that was overturned by the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. By that time I was parking in the AA lot for EDS/HP in the old Saber building. The Sign on the parking lot gate still said no firearms then in tiny letters at the bottom... Except for SDA....

The whole school parking lot change made life much easier. There were always 4-5 cars parked on the shoulder across the street from my kiddos school along with mine. Duh.. wonder why..
