I voted both, but it depends. On duty, I carry my primary 1911. In my weak side front pocket, I carry a 431PD .32mag Smith. On my weak side belt, I carry a JKaBar TDI. I figure Im good to go, no matter the situation.

Off duty, I normally carry my 431PD and a knife.

i voted knife, cuz right now I've only got 2 guns, and don't have a lot of chance when i can carry both. neither are truly pocket guns. If i had the chance or need, i would carry a gun as a backup.

Does my pocket S&W folder count as a backup or does it have to be a full fledged defense knife? I have tried carrying a fixed blade backup, but it was just too much trouble to carry comfortably.

Primary weapon Glock 22
Backup weapon Glock 27
secondary backup weapon either a CRKT M16 half serrated half straight or a S&W Cutting Horse ( an evil looking curved full serrated blade).

I would say that a folder could be considered a backup depending on the model. I have a CRKT M16-14 that I would consider a backup. that being said as soon as I get some edged weapon training and find a fixed blade that works for me that is what I will carry!
