you can sand blast or bead blast, at work the enviro-nuts have taken all the good chemicals away, we're down to 409 and alcohol and not the good drinking kind

If the dimensions of your piece will allow, a coating over top of the chrome will actually provide better protection for the base metal than either of the two coatings can alone.

In a former life, we actually did a plating job of Tin over top of Nickle for extreme salt-spray corrosion resistance. No reason to remove the chrome unless you really have a concern with interference when re-assembling after the coating over coating.

Chemical and/or electrolytic removal of chrome can be very damaging to the base metal and I'd recommend against it unless absolutely necessary. You can blast away at it and get it off, but (again) you will remove base metal in fairly non-uniform amounts. Maybe it'll work out ok, maybe not.

My .02 worth is if you cannot avoid removal of the chrome, find someone who really knows what they're doing to "de-chrome" it.
