Hey I'm new to this forum and I'm thinking about buying a Thompson pro hunter. I am just not sure on the caliber. I have a 270 and have had a 30-06 in the past. I hunt white tail and hogs from time to time. I just want something that I could shoot anything in north America and not have problems finding ammunition. Any advise or opinions welcome

The 270 and 30-06 are probably the two most popular calibers as far as finding ammo. Ballistics on the two are very simular. Either should get the job done. I have a 270, works great for me.

If you can handle the recoil of the 7mag or the 300win mag I say go for it. But the 30-06 can handle anything also. It is my go to rifle when hunting season rolls around.

Either will suit your needs. You will just need to match your ammo to your game. There are tons of variations for the 06. I personally shoot a 7mm and love it as a elk/deer rifle

You don't want a 7mm-08, not if you're serious about "anything in North America." It's a fine caliber, but you would be seriously undergunned for the big stuff. I like the .300WSM, and would have one if I hadn't bought a .300 Win Mag some 25+ years ago. It, the 7 mags or .300 mags would serve you fine. You might research .325WSM as well. When it comes to ammo availability, the good ole 7mm Rem Mag and .300 Win Mags would probably win out, UNLESS you want to go back to the .30-06. In the ammo availability category, you're not gonna' beat the .270 and .30-06!
