Air gun silencer

A friend that live in town with a squirrel problem bought a Gamo air rifle that will shoot the pba ammo 1600 FPS. Much faster than a .22LR. It is also much louder than a normal air gun or a .22LR. Is there a silencer that he can use to reduce the noise?

Some airgun manufacturers make suppressors for their airguns. They are not regulated by ATF since airguns are not classified as firearms.

Not exactly correct. Excerpt from the BATFE website;

Q: Are Paintball and/or Airgun Sound Suppressers NFA firearms?

The terms firearm silencer and firearm muffler mean any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication.

Numerous paintball and airgun silencers tested by ATFs Firearms Technology Branch have been determined to be, by nature of their design and function, firearm silencers. Because silencers are NFA weapons, an individual wishing to manufacture or transfer such a silencer must receive prior approval from ATF and pay the required tax. See also What are the required transfer procedures for an individual who is not qualified as a manufacturer, importer, or dealer of NFA firearms? and How does an individual obtain authorization to make an NFA firearm? for application details.

If you have any further questions as to the classification of a paintball or airgun silencer, please send a written request to ATFs Firearms Technology Branch.

The noise is probably primarily the pellet going super sonic. Not a lot you can do about that.

The pic on the front page of that site.. shows the dampener and most of the barrel wet. Did he dip it? Or is that just for dramatic effect?

Decibels are a logarithmic unit of measurement. When you're talking about something that's already quiet, 6dB is quite a lot.

But I see what you're saying and it's still a good point as to their marketing... schemes. lol
