Greatly satisfied with my Ruger GP-100 .357, I decided to look to Ruger for a 22 mag pistol & found that they sell the single six in a .17 HMR caliber!

I'm probably going to place an order for one in the next couple of days & thought I'd get a consensus from the okshooters crowd on the thoughts of the .17 HMR in a pistol.

Bottom line is if you want one,,, Get one!

But my question is why was the cartridge even invented?

It is a solution to a problem that never existed in the first place.

I have a few buddies who have rifles in .17 HMR,,,
They shoot very well but they don't have an advantage over say a .22 magnum.

I have sat at the range and watched them shoot the .17 at 150 yards,,,
Their groups aren't any tighter than with their .22 mag rifles,,,
Even when they move to 200 yards there is no difference,,,
If there is no gain in performance why spend the coin?

Honestly my friend,,,
I think it was a brilliant marketing move,,,
Hornady said "Let's create another non-reloadable cartridge.",,,
You know they just love the popularity this cartridge has found lately.

A quick check at Cabela's gave these results:
.22 LR = 4 cents a round
.22 Mag = 9 cents a round
.17 HMY = 18 cents a round

But, like I said before,,,
If you want one, that's all the reason necessary.

Have fun with it my friend!

the ammo pricing is what i was just about to look up. thanks for that info. the fact that i'd never be able to shoot 22LR out of the 17 if i wanted to also has me leaning back on the wmr. i think this gun in 22wmr requires a separate cylinder for shooting LR out of it, need to check on that too. i may end up going for the wmr instead.

I've got a 17 hmr pistol.
Burris scope on it.

I buy my ammo in bulk so I don't sit and think about how expensive it is when I'm shooting.
You know........only hurts once.:lookaroun

True it's a niche market. But still fun. No one can convince you rather it's for you.
It's my varmit sidearm, because my varmit gun is a 17 hmr.
