I figure the “18 inch in gel”- which for social work in a maximum, to limit overpenetration- is a minimum for hunting, as we are trying to ensure an exit wound. ( especially with pistol rounds, which dont have much shock, and thus are more likely to need blood trailing..

Exactly. Plus, my gel is 20% (nato standard) not the 10% (fbi standard). I have read that if you add 30% more depth of penetration to 20% performance, then that is what it would have been in 10%. However, math has never been my strong suit. ;-)

Have you tried the all copper Underwood 140 grain extreme penetrators or the Underwood 200 grain flat point hard cast?
Both are highly recommended for dangerous game so I’m interested how they compare to what you have already tested.

I haven’t tried any of those particular ones, but I do have a hefty amount of 155gr Barnes Tac-XPB solid copper HPs coming. I plan to try them in the 10mm and 40 cal carbines and pistols.

From what I’ve seen in other stuff, the hard cast will likely zip right through with no expansion (tested a 180 hard cast and coated myself and it went through 33 inches of gel and a back board without a hitch. Here’s a picture of that same bullet that I managed to recover in a 40sw test, only becuase it bounced back and landed on my table. Haha. Zero deformation. Cast just bore a hole and create minimal “spider” trauma as I’ve started calling it. Great for hogs and heavy critters where you need deep penetration though.

Thanks for posting these findings. It’s real information that a guy can chew on.

I find the older I get the more I fall into the Keith camp, depending on what needs put down. A couple hundred and in its Keith, reaching out on softer skinned stuff it’s O’Connor. It would be interesting to see what a hard cast , flat as will feed or even slightly concave projectile would do at 1150-1200 fps would do. I have my suspicions that you’d need a pretty solid backstop to recover the boolits.

I have some from my hard cast flat nose 4570 did tk the gel. Didn’t recover projectile of cours, but you can see the effect on gel.
